All courses on BuildUp include a course task that helps users practice their new skills as they learn. Think of it as a fun exercise users can do to apply what you have taught them, and share their work with other users for feedback.
Because we strongly believe in the power of active learning, the number of completed tasks added to your course community factors into how high your course trends in our course listings. This means that encouraging your users to do your tasks is an important part of your success as a teacher!
Here are three tips for creating a course project that your users will do, enjoy and share:
- Make your tasks easy to start.
The best course tasks are easy to start and encourage users to dive right in while watching your course. Avoid an intensive, complicated task that will take users a long time to complete. Users are more likely to do a lightweight exercise that allows them to engage with immediately and feel a quick sense of accomplishment from completing. Here is a great example of a lightweight project.
- Make your task instructions easy to understand.
Your Task Description is your blank canvas for encouraging users to share their work - format it however you'd like, but be sure to keep it clear and straightforward. Feel free to attach files or include additional resources, articles, or anything else users may find helpful. If your task requires multiple steps, list them out clearly to keep it digestible. Here is a great example.
- Encourage users to share their work along the way.
Encourage your users to share their work in progress, rather than waiting to submit a "final" outcome. The more work users share along the way, the more feedback they'll get from other users, which means a better learning experience. If relevant, break your tasks down into steps so users know when and what to share. Here is a great example.
